Life in Kenya

Picture
There are countless cultures that differ from each other, and collide with modern day living. Could it be possible that the way of life in Kenya, and also different areas of Africa, be one of the mean reasons for chaos and poverty

Cultures

There are more than 70 tribal groups among the Africans in Kenya. Western cultural values are becoming more ingrained and traditional values are disappearing. Regardless of these influences, each group has left its mark on the civilization of today and creates one of the most fascinating cultures in the world. English and Swahili are the languages taught throughout the country, but there are many other tribal languages.

Religion

As we all know, Africa has an assortment of diverse religions. These include Christian, Muslim, and also different tribal customs. The majority of the Kenyans are Christian. Islam is the second largest religion in Kenya. The largest number of muslims in Kenya are found in Mombasa and in the neighboring coastal regions, as well as northeastern regions of Kenya. The spread of Christianity has largely eliminated many of the traditional and tribal beliefs held by the people of Kenya, prior to contact with Europeans. Muslims make up some 30% of the population. In the more remote tribal areas you'll find a mixture of Muslims, Christians and those who follow their ancestral tribal beliefs. For the most part, each tribe has its own set of beliefs, which is usually somehow tied to their territory. Originally Kenyans believed in a single God. "Ngai" or "Were" are common names for God.

Food

Much of their food includes the traditional beef, chicken with potatoes, rice, or vegetables. Throughout the year fruits are also available. These include pineapples, bananas, papaya, and occasionally citrus fruits. Kenya has a wide selection of beverages which  consist of tea, coffee, and beer.

Most Kenyans can not afford to buy at a bigger city market, so they must buy from smaller local shops, on street markets, or even straight from the producer.
